The area around the Otzberg probably belonged to the territory that King Pippin gave to the Fulda monastery in 766 together with Groß-Umstadt.
The fortress Otzberg was probably built at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. At this time, the abbot Marquard I von Fulda secured the monastery property and built castles that can be seen from afar as a sign of his influence.
