A great triangle of high ground between the southern end of Thirlmere and Grasmere, Steel Fell is a familiar sight to motorists on the A591. While it lacks the intrigue of neighbouring Helm Crag’s rocky outcrops, it is a fell of soaring lines and magical vistas.

Steel Fell is held aloft by three ridges that run north, west and southeast. The southeast ridge is the sharpest, and descends to Grasmere, where you can seek accommodation. The easiest way to approach the summit is by ascending the north ridge from the top of Dunmail Raise. Wainwright baggers may want to continue along the west ridge towards the summit of Calf Crag and beyond.

The summit’s location makes it a superb vantage for gazing north along the great rift between the Central Fells and the Helvellyn range. The finest sight, rising beyond the rift and Thirlmere, is the complex and attractive form of Blencathra’s southern face.

The central apex of three ridges, Steel Fell is a distinctive and intimidating presence to the south of Thirlmere. It is most commonly accessed from Dunmail Raise via a steep clamber up its eastern face or from Grasmere along its more accommodating south east ridge.

Steel Fell stands at 1,814 feet (553 m) in the Wythburn Fells of the central Lake District.

Normally run from Dunmail Raise, often as the first summit en route to High Raise, it's also a great loop from Grasmere.
