    Hiking

The signpost shows the routes around the Zucco Sillegio summit, which then meet again here. We walked the circular path to the right, which led us past the monastery and magnificent views of the valley, the massif and Lake Como. However, the descent from the summit (route 71a / b, red-white-red) is very steep and stony in places and is therefore only recommended with good shoes.

Embark on the Sentiero del Fiume Meria Trail, a challenging hike that follows the Meria river through a wild and serene landscape. This difficult route covers 5.5 miles (8.8 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1978 feet (603 metres), taking approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will discover numerous waterfalls, cascades, and crystal-clear pools, including unique natural basins known as "marmitte dei giganti," as you navigate the varied terrain.

This trail is best suited for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness and familiarity with mountain environments. Be prepared for several river crossings; water levels can make these more challenging, and you might get your feet wet. It is essential to bring enough food and water, as there are no refreshment points available along the main path. Plan your visit carefully to ensure you have adequate daylight and energy for the duration.

The Sentiero del Fiume Meria Trail is nestled within the Grigne Special Protection Area, offering a unique natural experience. The route features sections equipped with metal ropes, chains, and steps to assist you over rocky and exposed areas, adding to the adventure. As you hike, you can look forward to panoramic views of Lake Lecco and the impressive Grigna Settentrionale mountain, especially on your return journey, and a peaceful stop at Alpe di Era.

Embark on a moderate hike along the Historic pilgrimage route to Rifugio Bietti Buzzi from Somana, covering 5.7 miles (9.2 km) with an ascent of 2020 feet (616 metres). This journey typically takes around 4 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You begin on cobblestone steps in Somana, following a historic via crucis past a small chapel and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria sopra Olcio. As you gain elevation, the path transitions from village lanes to mountain terrain, leading you through scenic sections with cable railings. You will eventually reach Alpe di Era, a peaceful alpine meadow featuring a restored chapel and views of the Grigna massif. Beyond this point, the route continues through beech forests and limestone rock landscapes characteristic of the Grigna region.

To start your adventure, head to Somana, the traditional trailhead for this historic route. Parking is generally available in the village, but it is advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. There are no specific permits or fees required to hike this trail. The best time to visit is from late spring through early autumn when the weather is stable and the refuge is fully operational. Always check local conditions before you go, as mountain weather can change quickly.

This route is more than just a hike; it is a journey through history, tracing the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims. The trail connects you to Rifugio Bietti Buzzi, a mountain hut located in the heart of the Northern Grigna, offering expansive views of Lake Como and the surrounding Alps. The refuge, recently restored, also serves as a base for exploring some of the region's renowned climbing routes. This path also holds significance from World War II, as resistance fighters once moved through these same valleys.
