The Altmühl has its origin here and begins its journey of 223 kilometers to the confluence with the Danube. The Hornauer Weiher is the official origin of the Altmühl, although it has several small tributaries. None of the sources of these rivers was defined as the sole source of the Altmühl, because one alone is too small to feed the Altmühl. Therefore it was decided in 1904 that the origin of the Altmühl is the lower drainage ditch of the Hornauer Weiher.
