    Hiking

Immediately above San Rocchino. Panoramic place on the Camaiore valley. Crossroads for many paths. I suggest you leave your car at Tre Scolli, avoid leaving it on the climb that leads to San Rocchino, they are scratched by the locals who do not like the presence of cars at that point. There are many cliffs to climb in the surrounding area.

Crossroads of trails on the southern Apuan Alps, a very beautiful and quiet place

    1,000m

Embark on the Monte Matanna Loop from Casoli, a challenging hike that immerses you in the diverse landscapes of Tuscany's Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane. This difficult route covers 8.8 miles (14.1 km) and demands a significant ascent of 3288 feet (1002 metres), typically taking around 6 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You'll start your journey through lush woods, gradually transitioning to open mountain ridges adorned with bare rock and green lawns as you climb higher. The panoramic views from the Summit of Monte Matanna are a true highlight, offering sweeping vistas that, on clear days, extend to the sea, various islands, and the rugged peaks of the southern Apuan Alps.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration due to the route's difficulty. The trail becomes very steep and rocky, especially towards the end, so you will need very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. Parking is generally available in villages like Casoli, which serves as a common starting point for this Monte Matanna loop hike. Always check local conditions before you go, as weather can significantly impact the mountain environment.

This particular loop stands out for its dramatic changes in scenery, moving from dense forest to exposed alpine terrain. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of the Apuan Alps, a sub-range of the northern Apennines. The expansive views from viewpoints like Callare di Matanna provide a broad perspective of northern Tuscany, making it a memorable experience for those seeking a demanding yet rewarding day in the mountains.
