After the baroque Wilhelmsburg was destroyed by fire in 1774, the city palace was built in its present form. In the Schlossbaukommision Johann Wolfgang von Goethe participated decisively.

From 1535-1604, the old castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance style castle. The old round tower got 1728 a baroque hood.
