The Marincello Trail β Rodeo Valley Trail loop offers a quintessential Marin Headlands mountain biking adventure, winding through open meadows and rolling hills. As you climb the Marincello Trail, you'll be treated to panoramic vistas stretching across the North Bay, out to the Pacific Ocean, and even catching glimpses of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. The route combines well-maintained fire roads and gravel doubletrack, making for a varied and engaging ride through diverse landscapes.
This moderate 27.2-mile (43.9 km) loop involves a significant 2825 feet (861 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 38 minutes to complete. While the Marincello Trail features a continuous, gradual climb, the Rodeo Valley Trail offers a less technical, dirt and gravel road experience. Riders should be prepared for sustained effort and some sections that might challenge less experienced riders, potentially requiring dismounting.
Historically, the Marincello Trail was part of an ambitious, uncompleted development project, now transformed into a beloved trail system. The Rodeo Valley Trail also boasts a unique past as a ranch road, recently rehabilitated to improve access and protect sensitive wetland habitats. This loop is an excellent way to explore the natural beauty and historical layers of the Marin Headlands, especially during the cooler summer months.

The Bobcat Trail β Marincello Trail loop offers a dynamic mountain biking experience through the Marin Headlands, blending fire roads with engaging singletrack. You'll start with a consistent climb on the Marincello Trail, which was originally planned as a four-lane boulevard, before enjoying a fast descent on the Bobcat Trail into Gerbode Valley. Throughout the ride, you're treated to expansive vistas of the Pacific Ocean, the North Bay, and even the iconic Golden Gate Bridge on clear days. The varied terrain, including the unique low wooden steps on the Old Springs Trail, keeps the ride interesting and challenging.
This 28.0-mile (45.0 km) moderate loop, with 2006 feet (612 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 6 minutes to complete. The Tennessee Valley parking lot is a popular starting point, but it can get very busy on weekends, so plan to arrive early. E-bikes are allowed, and it's worth noting the 15 mph speed limit on sections like the Bobcat Trail, which is occasionally enforced. This route is ideal for intermediate riders looking for a substantial outing with plenty of scenic rewards.
What makes this loop particularly interesting is its historical context; the Marincello Trail was once part of an ambitious, ultimately abandoned, residential development. This history contributes to its unique, consistent grade. Beyond the ride itself, you have the option to extend your adventure to Rodeo Beach, where you can visit a blue whale skeleton, adding another layer to your Marin Headlands exploration. It's a fantastic way to experience the diverse natural beauty and history of the area.
