To protect the Rammelsberg and to cover the eastern flank of the city wall up to the wide gate, it was built as one of the strongest structures in Europe. In the siege case, up to 1,000 men could be accommodated on the four floors. Its diameter measures a stately 26 meters, with the wall thickness alone over 6 meters.
