The body of water was created in the 17th century under the name Oberer Innerste or Neuer Benedicter Teich. It served to supply the Benedicte ore mine, which was located further north near the Upper Peacock Pond. Furthermore, water could be channeled from this reservoir via the upper Kehrzuggraben and the Benedikter Wasserlauf into the Hirschler pond.
