Embark on the challenging Trail of the 5 Mountains, a difficult 9.6-mile (15.4 km) hike that demands a very good fitness level. You will gain a significant 2305 feet (703 metres) in elevation, with the entire loop taking around 5 hours and 1 minute to complete. This route immerses you in the scenic Cimini Mountains, where a volcanic landscape unfolds with dense beech forests and scattered boulders. As you ascend, you will encounter majestic trees, some over 50 meters tall, within the ancient beech forest of Monte Cimino. Keep an eye out for the unique Trembling Stone, a massive boulder balanced precariously on a rocky ledge near the summit, a true highlight of the trail. On clear days, you might even catch glimpses of the Tiber Valley and surrounding towns from the summit.

Before you set out, be aware that this difficult trail requires a very good fitness level due to its significant elevation gain. The ascent from Soriano nel Cimino to Monte Cimino includes steep sections, with an average gradient of 5.9% over 8.5 kilometers. Parking is generally available in Soriano nel Cimino, which serves as the convenient starting point for this ring tour. Plan to arrive early, especially on weekends, to secure a spot and allow ample time for your hike.

This trail guides you through a unique volcanic landscape, characterized by its rich geological history. The ancient beech forest of Monte Cimino is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, recognized for its exceptional natural beauty and ecological significance. These majestic trees, some towering over 50 meters, thrive in the fertile volcanic soil, creating a truly immersive natural experience. The Trembling Stone, or Sasso Menicante, further highlights the area's volcanic past, offering a fascinating natural wonder to discover along your journey.
