    Hiking

Inspiration Point is located between Exchange Peak and Boney Peak and the view to the ocean is amazing. To get there, you need to take a little detour from Backbone Trail but as you are already at high altitude, there aren't many meters of altitude left.

Backbone Trail: Mishe Mokwa to Ray Miller

    27.2km

If you're looking for a serious workout with incredible payoffs, the Backbone Trail from Mishe Mokwa to Ray Miller delivers. This difficult 16.9-mile (27.2 km) hike involves a substantial 2078 feet (633 metres) of elevation gain, making it a full-day commitment of around 8 hours and 9 minutes. You'll traverse diverse terrain, from chaparral-covered hillsides to rocky paths, with the distinctive crags of Boney Ridge providing a dramatic backdrop before you're rewarded with sweeping ocean views from Inspiration Point.

Planning for this point-to-point adventure means arranging a shuttle in advance, as you won't be returning to your starting point. Cell service can be unreliable, especially near the Ray Miller trailhead, so make sure your maps are downloaded before you head out. Given the significant sun exposure along much of the route, carrying ample water and planning for sun protection are crucial, particularly during warmer months.

This segment is a key part of the larger Backbone Trail, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Beyond the stunning vistas, you might spot local wildlife like mule deer or various bird species, though it's also wise to be aware of rattlesnakes in spring. It's a demanding route that truly immerses you in the wild heart of the Malibu backcountry.

The Mishe Mokwa and Sandstone Peak Loop offers a fantastic journey through the Santa Monica Mountains, showcasing a rugged wilderness feel with stony outcrops and impressive canyons. You'll traverse varied terrain, from chaparral to volcanic rock, with highlights like the dramatic Echo Cliffs and the precariously perched Balanced Rock. The route culminates at Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the range, where you're treated to sweeping 360-degree views of the Pacific and valleys.

This moderate 7.3-mile (11.7 km) hike involves 1333 feet (406 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 3 hours and 31 minutes to complete. Parking is free at either the Sandstone Peak or Mishe Mokwa trailheads, making access straightforward. Given the trail's exposed sections, especially on the climb, it's best to start early on warmer days and bring ample water.

Beyond its stunning vistas, this loop is notable for being one of the best dog-friendly trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, allowing your furry friends to join the adventure. It's part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the world's largest urban national park, offering a diverse ecosystem and unique geological formations like Split Rock.
