The Wangenheim Palace was built in 1829-32 according to plans by the Hanoverian court architect Georg Ludwig Laves. The construction was commissioned by Georg von Wangenheim. A winter garden was also added to the building by Laves in 1844.
King George V ascended to the Hanoverian throne in 1851. The crown endowment subsequently acquired the building and made it into a residential palace. King George V lived here for a period of ten years until 1862.
