Bury Ditches is an Iron Age hill fort from about 500BC. It is one of the best kept hill forts in England. There are great views to be had of Long Mynd, Corndon Hill and the Shropshire Hills from the top which makes the short sharp hike up there worth the effort.

Embark on a moderate touring bicycle adventure from Bishop's Castle to explore historic landmarks and scenic Shropshire Hills. This 16.5-mile (26.6 km) route, with an elevation gain of 1310 feet (399 metres), takes about 1 hour and 55 minutes to complete. You will cycle along quiet country roads, through ancient woodlands, and encounter some unpaved sections, offering diverse terrain and panoramic views of the Shropshire Hills, including Long Mynd and Corndon Hill. The journey culminates with spectacular vistas from the Bury Ditches Iron Age Hill Fort.

To begin your ride, head to Bishop's Castle, a quaint market town nestled within the Shropshire Hills close to the Welsh border. While the trail is generally considered moderate, some segments, particularly the ascent to Bury Ditches, are steep and may require good fitness. Be prepared for varied surfaces, as some routes in the area are not suitable for racing bikes due to off-road sections. The trail is accessible throughout the year, but checking local conditions for unpaved tracks is always a good idea.

This route stands out for its blend of natural beauty and rich history. You will visit Clun Castle, a spectacular ruin in the attractive town of Clun, which also offers pubs and tea shops. A major highlight is the Bury Ditches Iron Age Hill Fort, one of England's best-preserved hill forts, dating back to around 500 BC. The entire area is part of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ensuring a truly immersive outdoor experience.
