In the Dark Peak region of the Peak District National Park, Grindslow Knoll is a superb rocky perch on the end of Kinder Scout’s central south arm. From many vantage points, it appears independent from its famous parent, such is its character and the way it drops away to Crowden Clough on one side and Grindsbrook Clough on the other.

Offering a stunning vista across Edale, Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, Grindslow Knoll is a popular objective and one that can be accessed quickly from Edale village’s pubs and cafes. However, it is often part of a much longer adventure along Kinder Scout’s dramatic escarpment.

A gorgeous Kinder Scout viewpoint for Edale and the Great Ridge

Edale is the obvious base and start point for direct routes to Grindslow Knoll and can be accessed by road and rail. From Edale, the heights can be attained via Grindsbrook Clough, Golden Clough or a direct ascent up to Ringing Roger. Paths also ascend from Upper Booth Farm to the southwest, either up Grindslow Knoll’s flanks or via Crowden Clough.

In fact, there are so many wonderful routes onto Kinder Scout’s plateau that there are almost endless permutations for adventures that take in Grindslow Knoll. Beguiling rock formations, munching sheep and wide-open vistas are the order of the day. Along the escarpment to the northwest of the summit is the photogenic Labrador Rock and a continuation along the scarp will reveal even more fascinating rocky sights and tremendous views.

    Hiking

At 1,972 feet (601 m), Grindslow Knoll is a lofty perch, high on the termination of one of Kinder Scout's central southern limbs. This elevated and isolated position makes it a sumptuous viewpoint for Edale, across to the Great Ridge and beyond. It can be ascended straight from Edale, or worked into a longer outing on Kinder's escarpments.

    510m

Embark on the Kinder Scout Circular Walk, a moderate hiking route that takes you across varied terrain in the Peak District. You will cover 8.9 miles (14.4 km) and gain 1683 feet (513 metres) in elevation, typically completing the journey in about 4 hours and 23 minutes. As you hike, you will experience expansive moorland and rugged gritstone plateaus, with impressive rock formations like the Wool Packs adding to the dramatic scenery. On clear days, the views from the Kinder Low Trig Point stretch far across the landscape, offering a rewarding perspective of the Vale of Edale.

When planning your visit, be aware that conditions on the plateau can be challenging, often boggy with paths that are not always clear. Sturdy walking boots and waterproof clothing are essential, as the weather on Kinder Scout can change quickly and you will be very exposed. For navigation, it is wise to carry a map and compass or a reliable GPS device, as the route can be tricky to follow in places.

This circular route is a classic Peak District experience, known for its wild beauty and historical significance. Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District and played a crucial role in the access to mountains movement. The diverse landscape, from ancient clough woodland to the vast open moorland, makes it a notable destination for those seeking a true taste of the national park's rugged charm.
