The "Ascent to Penyal d'Ifac — Circular from Calpe" immerses you in a unique coastal landscape, ascending an imposing limestone rock that rises majestically above the Mediterranean. This challenging 4.4-mile (7.1 km) route takes you from a shady pine forest to exposed, rocky terrain after passing through the Ifach Rock Tunnel, culminating at the summit of Peñón de Ifach with 360-degree views over Calpe, the salt flats, and the sea. Prepare for an elevation gain of 1278 feet (389 meters) over approximately 2 hours and 49 minutes – an experience that demands good physical fitness and rewards you with unforgettable panoramas.
To undertake this ascent, it is essential to book your spot in advance, as there is a daily limit of 300 people to protect the natural park. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear with good grip, as the final section is technical and can be slippery. This route is not recommended for small children and is best avoided during the nesting months for seagulls, such as May and June.
Penyal d'Ifac is a singular geological phenomenon, an olistolith that forms Spain's smallest natural park, boasting exceptional biodiversity, including over 300 plant species. Beyond its natural value, it possesses a rich history, with remnants of ancient settlements and viewpoints built upon historical walls. It is a place where nature and history intertwine, offering a unique perspective of the Costa Blanca.
