    Hiking

A nice shady place for a break with restrooms and a water spigot that is on year-round. The Tonto Trail and Plateau Point are nearby. This is one of the popular campsites on your way down to or up from the Colorado River. Get a permit from the backcountry office if you plan to spend a night here.

For a long time, this place was known as Indian Garden. It was renamed in May 2023 as Havasupai Gardens.

The Bright Angel Trailhead – 1.5-Mile Resthouse loop from Grand Canyon Village plunges you into the heart of the Grand Canyon, offering an intimate perspective of its immense scale. As you descend, the trail provides sweeping views of the stratified canyon walls and unique desert foliage, passing through two distinctive hand-carved rock tunnels. This difficult 12.5-mile (20.2 km) hike, with a substantial 3384 feet (1031 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 8 hours and 15 minutes to complete, making it a serious undertaking for those ready to experience the canyon's depths.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration, as the return journey is entirely uphill and can be quite strenuous. The trailhead is conveniently located in Grand Canyon Village, but be prepared for potential parking challenges. During winter and early spring, the upper sections of the trail can be icy, so microspikes are highly recommended. Always carry ample water and salty snacks, especially since seasonal water availability at the 1.5-Mile Resthouse is not guaranteed year-round.

This iconic trail is one of the most popular ways to experience the Grand Canyon's interior, offering a glimpse into its rich history, having been used by Indigenous peoples and early miners. The 1.5-Mile Resthouse provides a welcome break with vault toilets and a rustic stone shade hut. Remember that mules also use the trail, so be prepared to yield to them, and always check current trail conditions before heading out.
