    Hiking

This is a close to perfection section of the Arizona Trail. The mountains are just unbelievably beautiful. The only challenge: there are no natural water sources, but there is a newly installed water collector in the middle of the section. Check the Guthook app to be on the safe side and take plenty of water from the Gila River.

Be aware of rattlesnakes. There are grassy sections where it is hard to spot a snake – and vice versa. In 2019 a hiker was bitten by a rattlesnake in these canyons.

Embark on a challenging hike along Arizona Trail: Passage 16 - Gila River Canyons, a difficult route spanning 26.8 miles (43.1 km). You will gain 3746 feet (1142 metres) in elevation, requiring about 12 hours and 14 minutes to complete. This passage immerses you in the remote White Canyon Wilderness, offering a true Sonoran Desert experience with rugged terrain and significant elevation changes. As you traverse, you will encounter spectacular gorge scenery and diverse landscapes, including towering saguaro forests. The trail often follows the Gila River, providing a unique opportunity to hike alongside its flowing waters and lush riparian environments. Look out for dramatic geological formations like The Spine and the narrow sections of Walnut Canyon. You might also spot vibrant wildflower displays if you visit during the right season.

Planning your journey on this remote passage requires careful preparation. Cell service is often unreliable, so make sure to download your komoot maps before you head out. Water sources, including the Gila River itself, can be inconsistent and require purification to be safe for drinking. Be ready for significant heat, even if you visit in early spring, and carry plenty of water. Consider starting early in the day to avoid the midday sun and allow ample time to complete the full distance.

This segment of the Arizona Trail is notable for its dramatic geological features and the rare chance to experience the Gila River up close. The contrast between the arid Sonoran Desert and the riparian zones along the river creates a unique ecosystem. You will find yourself surrounded by expansive views from points such as Dale's Butte, showcasing the vastness of the landscape. It is a passage that truly highlights the wild and untamed beauty of Arizona's canyon country.
