Robin of Pegswood designed to symbolise the area's mining heritage and links to Sherwood Forest in Nottingham.
The piece was created by local artist Tom Maley, whose previous work includes the bronze statue of Newcastle United legend Jackie Milburn on the approach to St James' Park and the unknown bronze soldier at the war memorial in Ashington.
Good marker for Pegswood turn where there is a co-op store if needed

    330m

This moderate road cycling loop takes you through 40.4 miles (65.0 km) of Northumberland's varied landscape, combining rural countryside with stunning coastal views. You'll experience the undulating Coquet Valley and the unspoilt Northumberland coastline, including the Coquet Estuary. The route features a moderate difficulty with 1095 feet (334 metres) of elevation gain, including some fun ups and downs through the dunes near Warkworth. Expect to spend around 2 hours and 43 minutes on your bike, passing charming villages and catching glimpses of the impressive Warkworth Castle.

Starting from Pegswood Station offers convenient public transport access to the trail. The route is predominantly on well-paved surfaces, making it generally easy to ride for road cyclists. However, be prepared for some moderate hills and a few short, steep climbs where you might need to dismount and push your bike. The trail combines flat coastal stretches with gently rolling inland roads, providing a diverse cycling experience.

This loop is particularly notable for blending picturesque landscapes with significant historical landmarks. You'll cycle past the prominent medieval Warkworth Castle, with its superbly preserved keep, and connect the coastal towns of Amble and Morpeth. The route also incorporates sections of the well-regarded Coast & Castles Cycle Route (NCN1) and offers glimpses into the region's mining heritage, including a statue commemorating "Robin of Pegswood" near the starting point.
