The inn on the country road from Lichtenfels to Kronach was built in 1822/23 by Paul Schuberth, a native of Redwitz and a trained gardener and valet to the last abbot of Langheim. Schuberth soon obtained permission from Queen Caroline of Bavaria (1776-1841), who had stayed there in 1823, to name the inn after her.
The "Karolinenhöhe" was a popular stop for travelers as long as the country road ran over the mountain (until 1909).
Due to the beautiful view of the Main Valley, it also became a popular destination for excursions to surrounding villages.
