In 1186, monks from Amelungsborn, Westphalia, founded a Cistercian monastery, which would soon become the most important city in Mecklenburg. The monastery area with its impressive buildings, above all the Doberan Minster as a former monastery church, still dominates the face of the place. On the English lawn you can roam through the picturesque monastery park with the almost completely preserved monastery wall, the ossuary (visit on request), the granary and the farm building, which provides a backdrop for various events for an incomparable atmosphere.
