    Mountain biking

Water, wind, and calcite erosion in per-volcanic sandstone formation.
Slightly acidic rainwater seeps into the sandstone during winter rains and dissolves some of the calcite. Warm and dry days cause the moisture to pull the dissolved calcium back out of the rock, causing holes and caves to form.
Watch for peregrine falcons and other birds of prey nesting high up in the Castle Rock caves.
The upper trails are closed Feb-July to avoid disturbing the nesting birds.

The Diablo Foothills Regional Park loop offers a captivating mountain biking journey through diverse terrain, from open grasslands to shady oak woodlands. You'll navigate a mix of smooth singletrack and challenging rocky sections, all while enjoying picturesque views of Mount Diablo and the distinctive Castle Rocks. The route includes notable features like Twin Ponds and blue oak-sprinkled knolls, providing a constantly changing backdrop for your ride.

This moderate 9.2-mile (14.9 km) loop involves about 1140 feet (347 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 1 hour and 31 minutes. While some sections are beginner-friendly, others demand good fitness and advanced riding skills, particularly on steep, loose descents. The park's varied network means you can tailor your ride, but be prepared for some challenging spots.

Beyond the riding, the park is rich in geological wonders, including the impressive Mammoth Rock and the unique China Wall. It also serves as a gateway to broader exploration, with connections to neighboring Mount Diablo State Park. The landscape is especially vibrant in winter and spring, when meadows are green and wildflowers are in bloom, offering a beautiful natural escape.
