An anecdote explains how the people of Dietfurt got their nickname "Chinese" and thus also their Chinese carnival:
The prince-bishop of Eichstätt once stated that the people of Dietfurt paid too few fiefs and taxes; he sent his eunuch to check on things there. The people of Dietfurt, informed of the chamberlain's mission, locked their city gates and did not allow him entry. The eunuch angrily reported to his bishop that the people of Dietfurt seemed like the “Chinese” to him – they holed up behind their wall and took no notice of an episcopal eunuch.
