The Great Falls – Billy Goat Trail Section C loop from Cabin John offers a tranquil jogging experience along the Potomac River, winding through a wooded area with outstanding river views. You'll navigate varied terrain, including rocky sections and soft, mulch-like paths, and even spot Vaso Island and a small waterfall. This moderate 5.5-mile (8.8 km) route, with its gentle 147 feet (45 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 54 minutes, making it a great option for a relatively quick yet scenic outing.

To plan your visit, note that the trail is accessible from the Cabin John area and is often combined with the C&O Canal Towpath to form a loop. While generally considered easier than other Billy Goat sections, hiking boots are still recommended due to rocky traverses and a stream crossing on rocks. Spring offers beautiful wildflowers, and fall brings vibrant colors, making these seasons particularly appealing for a visit.

This section of the Billy Goat Trail is known for being quieter and more serene than the very popular Section A, providing a peaceful exploration of the lower Mather Gorge. Part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, it's a natural gem close to Washington D.C., offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and impressive river vistas, including cliffs popular with climbers.
