We come across the small museum in a renovated half-timbered house on Langgasse. Here, with the help of a diorama, the subtropical jungle lake in the area of today's Messel mine is illustrated. Among the fossil insects, reptiles, birds, mammals and plants on display, the world-famous Messel prehistoric horse is particularly noteworthy. Evolution is illustrated by diagrams. Another section is dedicated to the history of open-cast oil shale mining from the 19th century until the closure of the mineral oil works.
