    Hiking

On January 20, 1820, Daniel Heinrich Delius, the President of the Trier government, acquired the monastery estate of Laach Abbey. Between 1840 and 1845, his descendants, the Delius and von Ammon families, as owners of the monastery estate and the lake, had a new Delius tunnel built approximately 5 meters lower and approximately 1,070 meters long, with the older Fulbert tunnel partially filled with the new excavated material.

This reduced the lake's surface area by approximately 48 hectares, and the agriculturally usable area was significantly increased.

Here a drainage tunnel was built around 1840 for the Laacher See to increase the usable agricultural area. Already in the 12th century there was such a tunnel, which lowered the lake level by 5 m. A medieval masterpiece! (see picture)

    Hiking

The mouth of the Delius tunnel is only a few meters away from the circular lake path and is a worthwhile destination. The tunnel is explained on an information board, along with lots of information about the geological structure of the region. The mouth tunnel offers an interesting photo opportunity.
