Hikes up Canisp don’t attract anywhere near as many walkers as its famous neighbour Suilven to the west. While Suilven has a jaw-dropping ridgeline, Canisp is actually higher, at 2,779 feet (847 m) and requires a shorter walk. In fact, if you really want to admire its famous sister, doing so from Canisp’s summit is the best way.
In the middle of extraordinarily wild and remote knock and lochan landscape, the lengthy hiking trails to Canisp’s peak are tricky, with rough, stony terrain. Concentration is sometimes required to pick your way across bogs and fields of rubble, making this an adventure for the sure-footed. Nonetheless, every step of the way, you’ll get to experience the surreality of the Assynt landscape.
Hiking the rugged, glacier-torn landscape of the Assynt
The most straightforward starting point for hiking trails up Canisp is from the northern end of Loch Awe. Parking is in a gravel layby on the A837 with a ‘P’ sign marking it. The initial, flatish stretch is often boggy, with numerous burns working their way off the mountain. Soon, Canisp’s rocky nature makes itself known, and the hiking continues in this vein.
Hiking Canisp is fairly consistent going, with some steep pulls towards the summit. If the skies are clear though, you won’t mind the effort because, momentarily, you’ll be slapped round the chops with an extraordinary view of Suilven. With the North Minch glittering behind, there are few better views of this jagged ridge-lined mountain.
Should you be able to tear your eyes away, you can admire Ben More Assynt and its siblings to the east as well as the complex form of Quinag to the north. Everywhere, lochan landscape is punctuated by abrupt mountains, making it feel as though the landscape is 50% water.
Good weather is exquisite here, no matter what time of year, but snow and icy conditions are the sole purview of winter mountaineers.

Hiking
After about 3 km, the path is no longer visible. There are no signposts along the entire route. A hiker suggested simply heading towards the summit, but there is no path.
We were lucky that it hadn't rained for a long time; I can't imagine how wet the path would be at the beginning in the moor otherwise.
But the beautiful view at the end is definitely worth it.

The view of Suilven from Canisp shows this fine mountain from an unusual angle, different from the bald tower that you see from the Lochinver direction.
