Wansfell Pike

Hiking

4.9

(60)

Wansfell is the name given to the broad, undulating ridge that divides the pastures around Ambleside and Troutbeck. Hikes to Wansfell are deservedly popular; along with charming Loughrigg Fell, it is the easiest summit to attain from Ambleside and it rewards those who make the effort with splendid views of Windermere and beyond.

Wainwright baggers beware! The official Wainwright summit of Wansfell is Baystones, on the northeastern end of the ridge. Wansfell Pike, often mistaken as the Wainwright, is a rocky knoll on the southwestern end and arguably boasts the better view. The summit in question here is midway along the main Wansfell ridge.

There are a number of starting points for hikes to Wansfell. One option is to park high on the Kirkstone Pass and enjoy a gentle walk to the summit, making it one of the least strenuous hill walks in Lakeland. The classic way up is from Ambleside, via the picturesque Stockghyll Force waterfall, an ideal outing with kids and the dog.

    Hiking

Wansfell is a beautiful fell in the Lake District that has a long 1 mile (1.5 km) summit ridge with two tops, namely Wansfell Pike, 1,581 fi (482 m), in the south and Baystones, 1,601 ft (488 m) in the north. Wansfell Pike is considered the true summit, despite its lower height, but it is regarded as the one with the most wonderful scenic vistas out of the two. The connecting ridge is also worthy of note with views of the western peaks of the Kentmere Horseshoe.
