Ben Bhraggie Summit and Monument

Hiking

5.0

(70)

Hikes up Ben Bhraggie might not be as grand as Scotland’s typical behemoth mountains but its coastal position and steep ascent give a much more impressive feel than its 1,302 feet (397 m) might suggest. This beloved local hill is particularly notable for its towering, 100-foot (30 m) summit statue of George Leveson-Gower.

A somewhat controversial figure thanks to his decision to evict his tenant farmers and turn over the land to sheep farming, burning tenant properties along the way, Leveson-Gower was also one of the wealthiest people in Britain, if not the richest, at one point. The statue can be seen far and wide, particularly from Golspie, the village lying at the foot of Ben Bhraggie.

A modest hill with disproportionately far-reaching views

The foot of Ben Bhraggie is half enclosed by conifer forests and you can walk up from the village itself or the car park in Golspie Burn. Clear of the forest, you’ll find yourself hiking up across heather moorland and the views begin to hint at what lies ahead.

Reaching the summit, clear days will provide phenomenal views of the coastline in both directions and across the Loch Fleet estuary. Roam around the summit area for the best views inland, across the Highlands to the mountains springing up on every horizon and looming Ben Klibreck to the north west.

You can explore the moor up here for as long as you fancy but when you descend, it’s worth heading west into Big Burn gorge. This magical woodland is home to fantastic waterfalls where the crashing river makes its way to the North Sea. Ambling through here is endlessly pleasurable, particularly when you get to the viaduct, a perfect example of industry amidst nature.

Head up the hiking trails to Ben Bhraggie throughout the year, taking care of slippery ground in winter conditions. Sunrise views are magnificent across the North Sea and hiking in the evening brings golden light in summer.

You’ll find food and accommodation in Golspie, Dornoch and Brora.
