Beinn an Lochain

Hiking

5.0

(15)

Steep, pyramidal and eye-catching, this Corbett has fallen from grace, having made it onto the original Munro list but now acknowledged as only 2,956 feet (901 m). Still, even the hardiest of Munro-baggers will love hikes to Beinn an Lochain with its long, steep ridgeline and fantastic views.

On the edge of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Beinn an Lochain sits amongst incredible landscapes with peaks like Ben Donich, Beinn Ime and the Cobbler within spitting distance. Hiking to the top is usually a short and strenuous affair, with numerous boggy sections amongst the lower ground and a rocky ridge. Despite its serious look, the hiking isn’t technical and the summit looks significantly more intimidating than it truly is.

A fantastic climb in the Arrochar Alps

It’s worth noting that walking from Butter Bridge or Loch Restil will lead you into squelchy swamps. Far better to park at Easan Dubh Fall between the two, to minimise the squelch.

Thanks to Beinn an Lochain’s steepness, the climb is a little on the unrelenting side, short though it may be. On a clear day though, you won’t notice it as much because the views across Loch Restil and over to the Rest and Be Thankful pass are staggering, the road a mere ribbon winding into the distance.

On the summit, you’ll find a cairn and either views to bring a tear to your eye or lovely Scottish clag, which at least adds further excitement to the hike. Descents are often taken the same way but you can also head down the south west ridge over pathless, grassy ground once past the secondary summit.

Hikes up Beinn an Lochain can be wonderful all year round but always take into account the highly changeable nature of the weather here. In snow and ice, only those with the appropriate equipment and experience should head up.

Find sustenance and accommodation in Arrochar to the south east or west, around the top of Loch Fyne, in Inverary.
