Bellever Tor

Hiking

5.0

(178)

Hike to Bellever Tor in the very heart of Dartmoor National Park to clamber over the finest granite rocks and enjoy sweeping views. At 1,453 feet (443 m), the tor rises above the East Dart River and the surrounding Bellever Forest with its old conifer trees and munching Dartmoor ponies.

Hiking trails here spread out far and wide, making bagging the tor easy to include as part of a larger walk. With Postbridge, Princetown and Widecombe nearby, you’ve got plenty of choice for cafes and accommodation too.

360 degrees of Dartmoor

Bellever Tor itself is noteworthy for its mighty jumble of granite rocks and proud trig point. It’s surrounded by subtle signs of ancient settlements and the forest is ideal for a picnic. Trails are varied and include a wide, grassy track for exceptionally easy access.

Haytor and Higher White Tor are both visible from Bellever and, on sunny days, the moor utterly comes alive from this vantage. In winter, enjoy the breathtaking wilderness stretching out before you. The tor occasionally sees snow and, as long as you watch your step, witnessing the landscape bathed in a dusting is magical.

A fantastic viewpoint and within good tor-bagging reach of nearby hills, Bellever Tor is popular during school holidays but rarely crowded. Shoulder seasons and winter are serene whilst dawn visits may bring a tear to your eye.

Not far to the west lies the mystical Wistman’s Wood too, one of only a few high altitude oak woodlands in the country. In Bellever Forest car park, you’ll find toilets and picnic tables.

    Hiking

Fantastic Tor with big views in all directions and cannot be mistaken due to the triangulation point on its highest outcrop.

I almost always hike in from the North, coming from Postbridge which is a nice steady climb all the way to the base of this beautiful Tor.

Also to be noted that the nice wide path allows pushchairs and I myself have pushed my 4 yo to the top of Bellever Tor so we could play on these rocks together.

Beautiful Tor with great views. The rock formations are super cool and a great photo point and trig point to boot.

    Hiking

The magnificent granite rock formation of Bellever Tor affords magnificent views over Dartmoor. In stark contrast, however, the menacing mass of Dartmoor Prison can also be seen from this spot.
