This curious set of holes and tunnels were dug into the soft sandstone during the Civil War in the 17th century when Bridgnorth was under siege by parliamentary forces. Having gained no ground during three weeks of fighting, the Parliamentarians dug the tunnels under St Marys Church to blow up the Royalists supply of gunpowder which they stored there.
