The name goes back to Lambertus, the bishop of Maastricht, who was assassinated in Liège in 705/06 while defending ecclesiastical rights against secular violence.
The merchants of Munster, who maintained a close relationship with Liège, chose Lambertus, who was revered as a martyr, as the patron saint of the town and market church.
