Beinn Dorain

Hiking

5.0

(32)

Sandwiched between the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and the Ben Nevis and Glen Coe National Scenic Area, Beinn Dorain might be a Munro that many simply drive right on by. The mountain does plenty to draw hikers though thanks to its extraordinary conical shape, breathtaking views and ease of access.

With a summit cairn sitting at 3,530 feet (1,076 m), hiking up Beinn Dorain is a considerable undertaking when the car park lies at around 500 feet (150 m). The path is steep in most places and can get boggy lower down but the views are so beautiful from early on that you can stop as often as you like for a look around.

Fantastic views across the Southern Highlands

Hiking up Beinn Dorain in clear weather rewards your mammoth effort with incredible views north to the towering behemoths lining the way to Glen Coe and south to the rugged mountainous heartland of the national park. Loch Tulla and Loch Lyon glimmer below and every season brings different colours to this extraordinary landscape.

Beinn Dorain is commonly climbed in tandem with its neighbour, Beinn an Dothaidh, for a full day’s adventure. A fairly significant descent is required to the bealach at 2,440 feet (744 m) but for a double-Munro day, it’s a popular expedition.

Each season brings its own magic and the best is often summer and early autumn, the latter for outstanding light across the peaks. Winter ascents can be exhilarating and lack any technical hiking but snow and icy conditions should be left to experienced winter mountaineers.

Find accommodation and food to the south in Tyndrum and Crianlarich or to the northwest in Glencoe. If you’re hiking the peak on a bigger adventure, there are plenty of wonderful wild camping spots in the area too.

    Hiking

Beinn Dorain is a 3,530-foot (1,076 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It towers over the A82. Poet Duncan MacIntyre wrote fondly about this mountain in his works. When I visited, the clouds were swooping in and out, shrouding the summit intermittently. I'll definitely return to climb this one on a clear day.

    Hiking

The summit cairn for Beinn Dorain is further south than the larger cairn that walkers will come across. Continue to NN 32557 37847 to find the real summit cairn, which can be trickier to notice in poor visibility.
