The hike is quite demanding and because of the many meters in altitude, a certain basic level of fitness is essential; Surefootedness, a head for heights and good footwear are mandatory. There is no way to take shortcuts along the way.
If you do the tour there and back: the last few kilometers on the way back to Pico do Arieiro are really tough.
