Caerphilly Mountain has a rather ambitious name given that it rises to a charming 889 feet (271 m) but it’s absolutely well worth the ascent as its views are wonderful. Otherwise known as Caerphilly Common, the hill rises immediately south of the town of Caerphilly, north of the Welsh capital, Cardiff.

There are lots of trails around the common, allowing you to spend as long as you like seeking out the best spots to have a sandwich and admire the foothills of South Wales’ mountains. The hill is easy to access with a high car park, making it a great day out for small children.

Ascend Caerphilly’s glorious common to enjoy sweeping views

You can start from numerous places as Caerphilly Mountain lies in a web of footpaths. The car park near the summit is an obvious choice, but there are plenty more to the south or you could start out from Caerphilly itself. The trails on the hillside are grassy or earthen, and generally easy underfoot.

When you reach the summit, you’ll find a trig pillar and views across seemingly endless, rolling green hills and south, to Cardiff Bay. There are some wonderful loop walks around the hill or you can head out from the summit on considerably longer adventures. For families, there’s an array of child-orientated activities on the hillside and if you get peckish, there’s a year-round snack bar in the car park.

You can ascend Caerphilly Mountain at any time of year and it makes a gorgeous winter walk just as much as a blissful summer adventure.

Caerphilly Mountain is located in the Vale of Glamorgan in Caerphilly and stands at 271 m above sea level.

There are some magnificent panoramic views on offer here across Cardiff and Caerphilly, Feet, and on a sunny day, even over to Flat Home and Steep Home Islands, a pair of welsh islands lying in the Bristol Channel.
