The favorable location at the intersection of early migration and trade routes and at an important Weser ford was decisive for the emergence of the city and its development into the largest town in the Central Weser area. The name Nienburg has been handed down since 1025 and means "New Castle". To this day, the Stockturm, part of the former castle complex, is a visible reminder of the centuries in which Nienburg as a fortress guarded the most important Weser crossing between Porta Westfalica and Bremen.
