The collection dates back to the founding of the Diocesan Museum in 1853. The museum - the oldest of its kind in the German-speaking world - was intended, as it was called at the time, to be a "rescue station" for religious works of art, i.e. to provide "a safe haven for the many scattered and hidden works of Christian art which, if not in use, all too easily fall victim to trafficking or neglect." Since 1975, the museum has also housed the Paderborn Cathedral Treasury.
