This is a gracious and welcoming refuge of the C.A.I. immersed in the heart of the Stelvio park in the Valle delle Messi, reachable with a simple and varied walk of about an hour and a half.

Val delle Messi – Stelvio National Park

The Val delle Messi trail in Stelvio National Park takes you through varied terrain, from wide valley floors to steeper slopes with larch forests and rhododendron patches. You will find mowed meadows, wet areas with horsetails, and characteristic stone huts along the way. This moderate hike covers 6.8 miles (11.0 km) with an elevation gain of 2219 feet (676 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 59 minutes to complete.

While the overall difficulty is moderate, some sections of the trail, especially past Case Silizzi, involve steeper climbs and can include rocky steps. The paths range from comfortable dirt roads to unpaved alpine routes. Shorter sections are easily accessible, but longer routes, particularly those involving technical or hazardous terrain, require good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience. Always be prepared for changing conditions.

This valley is notable for its rich biodiversity, a mosaic of vegetation influenced by human activity, and opportunities for spotting wildlife like deer and marmots. You can visit the Santa Apollonia mineral spring, known for its bicarbonate-ferruginous water, or enjoy panoramic views from Bivacco Linge, an old shepherd's hut repurposed for hikers. The valley also connects to other routes within Stelvio National Park, including paths to Lago Nero and Passo di Pietra Rossa.
