A beautiful viewpoint of Ullswater and Helvellyn
Most walking routes to Sheffield Pike begin from Ullswater’s lovely wooded shores, where Wordsworth once famously ‘wandered lonely as a cloud.’ Glenridding and Patterdale have a host of accommodation options, as well as cafés, restaurants, gear shops and the like. Nestled beneath its southern slopes is a youth hostel, accessible by following the vehicle track alongside Glenridding Beck.
Hiking to Sheffield Pike is never technical, as long as you stick to the main paths. Most routes meet at Nick Head to the west and ascend gently from here. Walks are possible all year round and the summit is a great spot for a picnic or a wild camp.
In winter, the views to Helvellyn look all the more striking, though they are splendid on any given day. The soaring lines of Catstycam look particularly dramatic. To the west, the fell falls to Glenridding Dodd and then Ullswater’s pristine shores, backed by the handsome form of Place Fell. It is possible to link Sheffield Pike with Glenridding Dodd, though the going is rough and solid navigation skills are required when the clag is in.
