Lamorinda Trail & Carquinez Scenic Drive loop

    1,010m

This challenging 49.7-mile (80.1 km) road cycling loop combines the varied landscapes of the Lamorinda Trail and the Carquinez Scenic Drive, offering a journey through East Bay hills, urban edges, and stunning waterfront vistas. You'll pedal through the green Moraga Valley, past San Pablo Reservoir, before reaching the dramatic Carquinez Strait with its expansive views of bridges and the Sacramento River Delta. Expect a difficult ride with 3320 feet (1012 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 3 hours and 59 minutes, best suited for experienced cyclists.

When planning your ride, be aware that some sections of the Carquinez Scenic Drive have narrow shoulders or share the road with cars, so strong road cycling skills are a must. Riding the Carquinez portion clockwise can make the climbs feel more manageable. Late winter and early spring offer the most vibrant green hills and pleasant conditions for this extensive loop. Remember to bring plenty of water and snacks for the duration.

This route uniquely stitches together two distinct East Bay cycling experiences: the more sheltered, repurposed railway corridors of the Lamorinda Trail and the exposed, scenic coastal roads of the Carquinez Scenic Drive. You'll pass through charming towns like Martinez, Crockett, and Port Costa, and experience the blend of natural beauty and historical interest that defines this part of California. It's a fantastic option for those seeking a long, diverse, and rewarding day in the saddle.
