The four kneeling soldiers have to bear a huge burden: together they lift a large, antique sacrificial bowl and thus almost half the world into the air. The names of fallen soldiers from both wars and various quotations are engraved on the underside of the bowl and on other tablets. The work was inaugurated in 1930 after long discussions about a worthy monument and wanted to send a strong signal for the cohesion of society in economically and socially difficult times. The design for the memorial comes from the sculptor Alfred Ehlers from Berlin.
