Sgùrr a’ Mhaim is a magnificent mountain, probably the most conspicuous peak above Glen Nevis thanks to its shapely, domed form and a quartzite-capped summit that many mistake for a dusting of snow. Hikes to Sgùrr a’ Mhaim take you to arguably the finest bastion of the famous Ring of Steall, a sensational high route that takes in four Munros and the sort of views that make your heart sing.

Perhaps the mountain’s finest feature is the Devil’s Ridge, a narrow arête that connects it to the Munro top of Sgor an Iubhair to the south. Despite its wickedly intimidating title, the Devil’s Ridge is a marvellously entertaining grade one scramble and won’t trouble the adventurous hiker in kind conditions. Under snow and ice, however, this airy walkway is a wholly different ball game, best left to those with mountaineering skills and equipment.

Devilishly good hiking to one of the Mamores’ finest summits

Ancient stalkers’ paths make the Mamores gloriously accessible. They’re the perfect peaks if you’re new to hiking the Munros, undoubtedly spectacular with just the right amount of challenge. Walking routes to Sgùrr a’ Mhaim usually either start from Glen Nevis or Kinlochleven. Both have a range of accommodation options and are only a short drive from Fort William.

Approaches from Glen Nevis may be punishing on the thighs but the views to Ben Nevis’s bulk grow with every step. Once you reach the quartzite strewn summit, it’s the Ben that takes centre stage. It dominates the north, with the scything arc of the Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête completing the picture.

However, there’s so much to take in from this perch, such is its position in the heart of the West Highlands. Stob Ban’s impressive, craggy east face is seen beautifully to the south west, whilst to the east the rest of the Ring of Steall’s rollercoaster ridgeline beckons you to further your adventure.

    Running

One of four peaks on the classic 'Ring of Steall' round. It links to the remainder of the Mamores via the famous Devil's ridge, a grade one scramble. In clear weather you can see across Glen Nevis towards the summit of Ben Nevis.

    Hiking

The Ring of Steall is one of the greatest mountain walks in Scotland, and Sgùrr a'Mhàim is the best peak on it. Tethered to the Mamores range by the narrow and thrilling Devil’s Ridge, its pale summit is quartzite topped (often mistaken for snow) and a pedestal from which to take in a phenomenal mountain panorama.
