Walking routes to Moel Siabod have something for everyone. There are straightforward, if strenuous, ways up and there are fantastically adventurous scrambles to its wonderful summit. This gateway Snowdonia is a magnificent introduction to the unique charms of hiking in the national park.

The towering outline of Moel Siabod is the first mountainous sight on the drive into Snowdonia on the A5. Its position directly east of Wales’ highest mountains gives it an awe-inspiring view of the Snowdon Horseshoe, quite unlike any other. Meanwhile the broad backs of the Glyderau and the southern cwms of the Carneddau are seen beautifully. A trig point and shelter adorn the summit, great for enjoying a spot of lunch.

Those who Daear Ddu win

Earning this view is either by way of an energetic walk on its northern flanks or a wonderful grade one scramble via the dramatic Daear Ddu ridge.

The approach to the latter takes you past vestiges of the mining industry and some photogenic pools of water before arriving at a wondrous mountain cwm. The terrain around the large Llyn y Foel can be extremely boggy and at times dangerous. It is best to skirt the Llyn in a clockwise direction. The Daear Ddu is an exciting but straightforward grade one scramble, perfect for introducing the kids to such terrain. It is easier than most other grade one routes in Snowdonia.

Capel Curig is the obvious base for hikes to Moel Siabod and has plenty of accommodation options and one of the UK’s national outdoor centres in Plas y Brenin. To the south, the village of Dolwyddelan is also a good base for expeditions. In winter conditions, the mountain may be a bit of a stretch without mountaineering equipment, particularly the Daear Ddu.

There are fantastic views of Snowdonia from the top of Moel Siabod, but the weather must be clear. From the top it is possible to see 13 of the 14 highest peaks in Wales on a clear day without turning your head.

    Hiking

The eastern sentry to Eryri (Snowdonia), Moel Siabod stands guard over the village of Capel Curig. A variety of ascent options including easy grass slopes, historical quarry tracks and a gentle ridge scramble all end on a summit that provides one of the best views into the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) massif to be found anywhere in the national park.

    770m

Embark on the Moel Siabod and Daear Ddu Ridge Loop, a difficult hike spanning 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2520 feet (768 metres). This challenging route, estimated to take around 4 hours and 59 minutes, offers a diverse landscape as you ascend towards the summit. You will navigate a beginner-friendly scramble along the Daear Ddu Ridge, experiencing varied terrain that includes historical slate quarry ruins and the serene Llyn y Foel before reaching the peak. From the top of Moel Siabod, you are rewarded with expansive 360-degree views of Snowdonia's major peaks, making it a prime spot for panoramic vistas. This trail is perfect if you are looking for a rewarding and strenuous day out in the mountains.

To prepare for this demanding hike, ensure you wear sturdy shoes and have some alpine experience, especially for the Grade 1 scramble sections. The trail starts from Capel Curig, where parking is available, and the initial approach follows a road before a steep uphill climb past Rhos farm. Be ready for potentially wet and boggy sections, particularly around Llyn y Foel. You should also be comfortable with self-navigation, as the path may become less defined in scrambling areas.

This loop is a standout in Snowdonia National Park, not just for its physical challenge but also for its unique blend of natural beauty and historical elements. The route takes you through a landscape shaped by both ancient geology and human industry, with the slate quarry ruins offering a glimpse into the region's past. The climb to Moel Siabod is renowned for providing some of the most spectacular and comprehensive views across the entire park, allowing you to appreciate the scale and grandeur of the Welsh mountains from a single vantage point.
