The fortress is probably most famous because Hans Hermann von Katte, the childhood friend of the later Frederick the Great, was executed here because he wanted to accompany him on his planned but failed flight to France.

A walk through the old town of Küstrin is impressive. Only the foundations of the houses and the pavement of the streets have survived the war. The sad remains of the once beautiful city have been uncovered by restorers. A feeling like in Pompeii. Worth seeing!

Visitors shouldn't expect too much...it's a sprawling complex made up of remains of the fortress. If you want to learn more about history, you can go to the existing museum integrated into the fortress wall for a fee.
