Another delightful sight just down from the viaduct. While it may look like a waterfall, it's actually a weir. This is a great spot to have lunch and get a few photos. I hear there's good fishing around the area on the Wye.

The weir itself is now fenced-off to prevent public access. You can still admire the weir from the footpath, however, and gain access to the river a short step downstream.

The waterfall is easily accessible from the front as well as to its rear. Most routes will lead you to a footpath that comes from the front. In my opinion, however, the best routes come from coming downhill through to the back of the waterfall. So why not leave this Highlight until the end of your hike and take a different path than the rest?

Embark on the Monsal Head Circular Walk, an easy hike that guides you through the scenic Monsal Dale in the Peak District. This route covers 2.3 miles (3.7 km) and involves a gentle elevation gain of 305 feet (93 metres), typically taking around 1 hour and 4 minutes to complete. You will follow paths alongside the winding River Wye, offering peaceful riverside views before reaching the impressive Headstone Viaduct.

When planning your visit, be aware that sections of the trail can become muddy and slippery, especially after rain; good grip footwear is essential for comfort and safety. The route starts conveniently from Monsal Head, where parking is available, making it easy to begin your adventure. While mostly flat, expect a few short, steeper sections, particularly on the climb back up to the Monsal Head viewpoint.

The Headstone Viaduct, a prominent feature of this walk, stands as a testament to Victorian engineering, dramatically spanning the valley. As you hike, you might also encounter the picturesque Monsal Dale Weir, often described as a small waterfall, adding to the natural charm of the area.
