The Ka‘elehuluhulu Beach – Mahai‘ula Beach loop offers a delightful blend of pristine white sand beaches and dramatic volcanic terrain on the Big Island. You'll wander along the serene Mahai‘ula Beach, famed for its calm waters and shady spots, then navigate paths that cross ancient ʻaʻā lava fields and coarse sandy stretches leading to Ka‘elehuluhulu Beach. This easy 3.9-mile (6.3 km) hike, with just 80 feet (24 metres) of elevation gain, provides a diverse coastal experience in about 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Planning your visit requires a bit of foresight, as the access roads to Kekaha Kai State Park can be unpaved and rough; a 4-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, or you might face a walk if you have a 2WD car. Always bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the trail is exposed and can get very hot. An early start is best to beat the heat and enjoy the tranquility of the beaches before they get busy.
This trail is a segment of the historic Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, an ancient shoreline path that once connected communities along the coast. Beyond the stunning ocean views and volcanic landscapes, you have a good chance of spotting Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles basking on the shores. The loop provides a fantastic opportunity to experience the unique natural beauty and wildlife of the Kona coast.
