Also known as 'McCook's Cottage', Ben Alder Cottage bothy is a brilliantly remote refuge, nestled between the peak of Ben Alder and Loch Ericht.

This medium-sized bothy sleeps up to six people, and has a wood-burning stove, although you'll need to bring your own supply of firewood.

This bothy has a rich history, having been used by ghillies, stalkers, fishermen, walkers and poachers over the years, and is also said to be haunted!

A Boothy in the right place. On one side 2-lane marsh, on the other side a path over the mountains with a difficult ford at high tide. And then there is a "path" along the lake shore towards Dalwhinnie

Embark on the Ben Alder circuit from Dalwhinnie for a challenging mountain biking adventure deep in the Scottish Highlands. This difficult 34.8-mile (56.0 km) route takes you through truly remote landscapes, offering expansive views of Ben Alder and the vast Loch Ericht. You will gain 3241 feet (988 metres) in elevation, with an estimated duration of 5 hours and 4 minutes. Expect significant hike-a-bike sections as you navigate the rugged terrain, but the effort is rewarded with a profound sense of isolation and wilderness. You might even spot the historic Ben Alder Cottage along the way, adding a unique touch to your journey.

Planning for this remote circuit is crucial; you will need to be self-sufficient throughout your ride. Given the challenging nature of the terrain and the potential for rapid weather changes in the Highlands, good weather conditions are highly recommended for both your safety and to fully appreciate the views. Make sure to allocate ample time for your outing, as the extensive hike-a-bike sections will likely extend your overall duration. Always check local conditions before you set out.

This classic Scottish mountain biking route offers a genuine taste of Highland wilderness, setting it apart from more accessible trails. Its remote location within Cairngorms National Park means you will experience a profound sense of adventure and isolation, far from the crowds. The combination of vast loch views, challenging climbs, and historic landmarks like Ben Alder Cottage makes this circuit a notable experience for experienced riders seeking a true backcountry challenge.
