The shoemaker's boy in Heide is a bronze sculpture created in 1984 by the artist Siegfried J. Assmann. This sculpture honors the shoemaking trade, as the shoemaker's town used to be a craftsmen's street where mainly shoemakers worked. The St. Georg Fountain on the Heider Südermarkt was created in 1989 by sculptor Siegfried Assmann. It depicts the figure of Saint George slaying the dragon. Eight relief panels contain depictions of the history of Heide and Dithmarschen. The fountain is 5 meters high, 4 meters wide, and has 3 levels. The dragon lies defenselessly on its back with its back arched and legs stretched upwards. On its belly stands the brave warrior, victorious and confident, who is just thrusting his long spear into the dragon's open mouth. Through the arrangement of the elements, the dragon below, the warrior's inclined body above, and the thrusting spear, a balanced composition is created that emphasizes the confidence of the fighting man. Who will be the victor here is beyond question. With almost 47,000 square meters of undeveloped area, the market square in Heide is the largest in Germany and a place with history. During the time of the independent farmer republic of Dithmarschen, the square was the meeting place of the state assembly from 1447 onwards. As early as the 16th century, traders met there every Saturday for a weekly market. This has remained the case to this day. In addition, a large Christmas market takes place on the square every year, as well as the "Heider Marktfrieden" every two years - the largest medieval folk festival in Dithmarschen. https://www.ndr.de/ratgeber/reise/binnenland_elbe/Heide-Stadt-in-Nordseenaehe-mit-Marktplatz-der-Superlative-,heide132.html

Siegfried Assmann: Shoemaker's Boy The shoemaker's boy sits at the entrance to the street Schuhmacherort and is a monument to the shoemaking trade, because Schuhmacherort used to be a tradesmen's street, mainly for shoemakers and tanners. In 1846 there were 158 master shoemakers and 166 journeymen in Heide. The portrayal of the boy is very realistic and has a strong narrative character: the activity, the circumstances and also the clothing are portrayed in a lifelike manner, so that the memory is kept alive or awakened.

When you do the math, something amazing comes out: in 1845 Heide had around 5,396 inhabitants. These included 158 master shoemakers and 166 journeymen. So much concentrated competence deserves recognition: The shoemaker's boy at the beginning of the old town street is a reminder that the "shoemaker's town" in the middle of the 19th century was a craftsman's street where mainly cobblers and tanners practiced their craft.
