Kim En Joong was born in Korea. The son of a calligrapher, he first studied traditional calligraphy before entering the Seoul School of Fine Arts. To support himself during his studies, he taught drawing at the minor seminary in Seoul. There, he discovered Christianity and converted. In 1969, he came to Switzerland and France to study contemporary Western art and commit himself to the life of a painter and artist. There, he met the Dominicans and asked to be received into their Order. He was ordained a priest in 1974. Some eminent Dominicans among his elders then encouraged him to pursue his work as a form of "silent preaching" (Fra Angelico). He worked hard for years before writers (Julien Green...), great gallery owners (Yoshi, Sapone, Cazeaux-Béraudière...) and art specialists (François Mathey, Jean-Louis Prat, Bernard Antonioz...) became passionate about his work, which is in the spirit of sacred art. In 2000, he held the first exhibition of monumental works (since the 18th century) in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in tribute to Pope John Paul II, as he has done in several cathedrals in Europe and America. Soon after, he created stained glass windows for the cathedrals of Évry, Dax, and Ganagobie, which led to him being chosen for the Basilica of Brioude. The five bays of the west facade of the basilica immediately invite you to enter the heart of the Christian Mystery.
