A highlight this staircase hardly is, rather a "must". On the other hand, we had the beach almost entirely to ourselves on a sunny afternoon in May.... That was unexpectedly wonderful!

It's simply fantastic to be able to admire four such magnificent lighthouses in such a small area.

When the new Arkona lighthouse went into operation on April 1, 1905, two lighthouse optics, each with three spotlight lenses, distributed the light across the horizon. In 1995, the Stralsund Water and Shipping Authority installed a reliable and bright discharge lamp. Since then, one of the two lighthouse optics has been sufficient for the economic operation of the lighthouse. The second optic was restored by the Department of Traffic Technology in Koblenz and presented to the public next to the lighthouse in spring 2006. A panel next to it explains the optics.

The Arkona lighthouse can be easily reached from Putgarten on foot, by bike or on the “Kap Arkona train”. Anyone who has climbed the 175 steps will be treated to a truly wonderful panoramic view… By the way, all the steps are numbered so you always know how many steps there are to the top!😉 Anyone who wants to enjoy the view from the lighthouse should definitely check the opening times: Closed November - March! April 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. June - September 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. October 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. As of 2025, admission costs €3 per person. In addition to the new lighthouse, there is much more to see on Kap Arkona: the old lighthouse (Schinkel tower), the military bunkers, the fog signal station, the direction-finding tower, the Slavic castle wall with Jaromasburg. A short walk to the fishing village of Vitt is also highly recommended from here.
